How Can Vibration White Finger Be Prevented In The Workplace?

The best way to avoid the risk of anyone developing Vibration White Finger or Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome in the workplace is to avoid the use of vibrating equipment. However, in many cases the use of this type of machinery saves a huge amount of time in comparison to how the work was carried out before powered tools, so a compromise has to be reached.

Employers have a duty to adhere to the Control Of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 which is designed to reduce the potential susceptibility of developing vibration related injuries or issues. In addition to these regulations there are a range of options that can help reduce the dangers:

  • If it is possible to use a tool that does not vibrate but still achieves the same level of performance and efficiency in perform the task, then that could be the best option.
  • Ensure that you always use the correct tool for the job at hand; using a tool in a non-standard manner could increase the risk of vibration as it will not have been designed for use in that manner. As a result, gripping or holding the tool at a difficult angle could increase the risk of injury.
  • Make sure all tools are properly maintained; by ensuring that tools are in good condition it can minimise the danger of vibration through blunt blades, faulty motors or loose parts.
  • Make sure that all employees who use vibrating machinery are properly trained in how to do so safely – using a tool incorrectly can increase the risk of injury.
  • Do not grip or force a piece of machinery harder than is absolutely necessary.
  • If possible ensure that machinery is fitted with anti-vibration dampers and mountings, and look into fitting anti-vibration handles for appropriate tools.
  • The use of Personal Protective Equipment – in particular gloves, can be helpful in reducing the exposure to vibration through the hands.
  • If you must use tools that have a high risk of injury through vibration, ensure that you take regular, suitable breaks and operate the machinery for short periods. It can be beneficial if employers can look in to allowing employees to swap roles with colleagues to minimise the repetitive nature of some activities.
  • Try to keep tools in locations that will not involve the handles being cold when employees come to use them.
  • Try to maintain a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly and give up smoking – a healthy body is more likely to repair itself properly.
  • If you have any concerns about your health as a result of your job you should inform your employers immediately.
